Photography that is primarily focused on the photography of events and activities relating to weddings is known as wedding photography. It can include other types of portrait photography of the couple before the official wedding day, known as a pre-wedding shoot session. What should your settings be for wedding photography?

And so I’m going to break down camera settings for you. I separate this into three groups:

• Aperture
• Shutter speed
• ISO.

Aperture

The first thing that you all should set is aperture. Make sure that you set your aperture wide for shooting as wide open. It provides you blurry backgrounds, Shallow depth of field where the couple, the subject is really just popping and really blurred out background.

You will be able to get tack sharp images wide open at f/1.4 on your 50mm lens or if you are shooting on an 85mm, it’s at one point eight. So try and stay as wide open as possibly you can.

So the first step is to set your aperture because it will give you that blurry background and the only way to achieve that is through the aperture.

Shutter Speed

So when it comes to shutter speed, you should only set your shutter speed to be fast enough to avoid blurring. You don’t want my subject to blur. You don’t want that little camera shake that happens if your shutter speeds a little bit too slow and you get some blurring from yourself because you hit that shutter button, right?

So set your shutter speed to be 1/320 or high or 90% of the time it’s faster than 1/320 because you are shooting wide open in your aperture and you need to have a much faster shutter speed. So 90% of the time it’s pretty fast 1/320 or 1/500 whatever it is and the only time it’s under that is if you are shooting in low-light and you need the extra kick of light right.

You can maybe bring that up to 1/200 or 1/160, 1/125 if you really need to get that extra light or if you are shooting with flash and you need to stay within your sync speed and that will be 1/200 or less or slower.

ISO

Make sure you keep your ISO as low as you can to avoid noise. So you’re able to crank that ISO up.

Cranked it all the way up to as high as 8,000 once and you will be shocked at how little noise there was.

You don’t have any trouble going up over 3,000 during portraits if you are in low light, but the majority of the time. Try and keep it as low as I can.

So your aperture again, as wide open as possible. Shutter speed is fast enough to avoid blurring and your ISO is the last thing that you should dial in to make sure that the exposure is perfect.

Cameras and accessories made for wedding photography

I personally recommend you all to use Sony 5D mark IV with dual pixel autofocus which helps you to reduce blur into focus. Extremely perfect for working in low lighting conditions and featured with autofocus feature for easy focus on the subject while shooting handheld or on a gimbal.

Lens

You can use Sony 35mm, 70-200mm f/2.8 for portrait capture. The Sony 70-200 is a versatile lens for wedding photography.

You can also use third-party lenses like Sigma 105mm on your camera for good-quality images. They are cheap in price if you compare them with native lenses.

Lights

I personally use lights from Godox. Godox AD600BM is a manual light providing you natural lighting for better picture quality.

 So you can try lightings from Godox but there are many other brands you can use and explore.

Video cameras

Personally, I use Sony A6300 and Sony A73 as a backup camera. Sony gives you good options in video cameras with many advanced features like autofocus and auto color filling for achieving better quality video. Ideal for capturing the perfect moment.

Gimbal

It is used in functions like weddings for recording movement shots like on the entrance or the exit of the venue. The most popular gimbal nowadays available in the market is Zhiyun crane 2 compatible and allows you to freely use your camera for capturing the moments.

Wide Angle Lenses

The wide-angle lenses are used in marriage functions to capture wide-angle images and frames.

Specially used while recording the footage on the marriage venue for marriage videos and all.

Most wedding photographers use Sony A6300 16MM f/1.4 and Sony 24mm f/1.4 wide-angle lenses.

Buy or rent?

As is you are a professional wedding photographer. You will need different cameras and lenses for different locations. So you can buy all the cameras and lenses available in the market then there are no worries for you but If you can’t then?

So renting out the preferred camera and its accessories is more preferable in your budget. I always prefer to rent a camera and all other accessories required for a particular location.
